      <image:caption>DBT is provided through four distinct types of treatment: Skills training Skills Training focuses on enhancing a person’s capacity to function effectively by teaching new behaviors and generalizing these behaviors to many different environments. Basically, if you never learned to swim, you can’t judge yourself for being afraid of the ocean. You just need to learn to swim! Individual therapy focuses on improving and maintaining motivation, and learning how to apply new skills to specific challenges in your life. Individual therapy also helps to explore the secondary targets and beliefs /myths that interfere with healthy behaviors and functioning. Phone coaching targets improving your ability to apply skills in the moment, when needed. Yes, I will be available to you outside of normal therapy time to help coach you though difficult moments when needed. My name is Anthony Gonzalez and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Qualified Supervisor who has practiced in the mental health and medical fields for over 15 years. I was born and raised in Kansas City and have lived in several states over the past 20 years, with Florida being my home since 2009. Growing up in Kansas City, my beliefs and perspectives on the injustice of the human condition and the power of human potential were indelibly shaped. I received my Masters of Clinical Social Welfare from the University of Kansas (Rock Chalk Jayhawk!) in 2005. I was privileged to learn from incredible professors and peers, and that environment helped me to find my path as a clinician. Both are used to systematically decrease vulnerability to trauma-related thoughts and feelings, and increase confidence in your ability to tolerate and reduce discomfort. The first is In Vivo exposure. This helps to begin confronting and re-experiencing feared yet objectively safe situations. For example, if you tend to avoid crowds because of a traumatic event, we will gradually approach reengaging in groups of people, so long as it is objectively safe.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The DBT Protocols for Prolonged Exposure Therapy (DBT-PE) were developed by Dr. Melanie Harned. Building upon Dr. Edna Foa’s foundational research and Prolonged Exposure Therapy structure, she adapted PE to fit a more high-risk population. It was designed to treat the complex traumas and experiences of traumatic invalidation that far too many people have endured. It is an evidenced-based treatment with supporting research that continues to grow. DBT-PE is implemented in Stage 2 of DBT treatment when all self-injurious and self-destructive behaviors have been mitigated and controlled, normally after a minimum 20 weeks of DBT based therapy. A person must be capable of utilizing core mindfulness, distress tolerance and emotional regulation skills that will allow them to safely experience memories and intense emotions related to their traumatic events.</image:caption>

Thankfully, modern technology gives us the opportunity to remain connected and have access to the supports we need. COVID-19 has upended many of our normal routines, and accessing support may now be more important than ever. . Telehealth is an effective mode of therapy that allows us to conduct a full therapy session using a HIPAA compliant videoconferencing service. I use two different services, Doxy.me or Zoom, and will proceed with whichever platform you are most comfortable. Neither require you to create an account.</image:title>

      <image:caption>Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) was developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro and is a highly evidenced based treatment that is designed to relieve symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and anxiety. There is an increasing body of research showing EMDR is effective for other diagnoses, including depression, substance abuse and process addictions. EMDR is built upon the philosophy that when we experience disturbing life events, also known as traumas, we must fully process the thoughts and feelings in order to feel safe again. For some, these thoughts and feelings get “stuck” in an unprocessed state with maladaptive connections such as shame, guilt, fear, avoidance, etc. EMDR uses a process called bi-lateral stimulation (BLS) to help the brain and body more fully process these emotions and thoughts so the memory can be more effectively resolved.</image:caption>

Self-Management And Recovery Training (SMART) is an evidence-based approach to changing addictive behavior patterns using empowerment to encourage change.  It is an abstinence-oriented approach to understanding self-destructive behaviors and learning techniques to help inspire and develop real change.  The SMART philosophy shies away from labels of “alcoholic” or “addict”.   This skills and mindfulness-based approach to recovery can be a wonderful companion to therapy and 12-step work.  The techniques taught in SMART Recovery can be applied to any area where there is a desired change in behavior.</image:caption>
